MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
December 4, 2003
The Commission tabled this item until next month's meeting in order to solicit input from the
missing members.
SPOONER The Director stated that a member of the Canadian Days Committee brought this idea up at
PARK SIGN one of their meetings. Gray asked if Canadian Days would be funding the sign. The Director
stated that he was unsure if they had committed as a group to fund it. They would probably
want some of their wording on the sign if they were to help fund it. The Director did not know
how the Commission would feel about adding some wording to the sign that would advertise
Canadian Days.
Gray asked if there were any other park signs that had additional language other than the name
of the park. The Director said there were none. Steinert commented that the Canadian Days
Committee does a lot for the city and he felt that the Commission needs to remain open to this
issue.
Sanders stated that he did not object to the proposal. The Director does have some reservations
about advertising the Canadian Days event on the park sign. Gray agreed since the Canadian
Days festival is not the only event that goes on in that park. The Director was unsure what kind
of advertising benefit Canadian Days would get out of the wording on the sign. He could not
see that being a plus to their event other than just giving them some personal recognition.
Steinert said that he would support the proposal just because of all the Canadian Days
Committee does for the city. Gray felt that a precedent would be set if we allowed Canadian
Days' wording.
Gray suggested setting a policy on park signs. Broten presented an article about advertising in
St. Paul public parks. He stated that the St. Paul City Council passed a resolution approving
paid advertising called "sponsorships" on golf courses and certain athletic fields. Scenic St.
Paul and Friends of the Parks opposed the proposal and Friends of St. Paul Baseball supported
it.
The Director stated that the existing sign plan for Spooner Park should be revisited. Sanders
was asked to prepare a drawing to show how this request could fit with the Commission's
original idea for the sign.
JANUARY Since January 1 is the next scheduled meeting, the Commission decided to reschedule it due to
MEETING the New Year's Day holiday.
Steinert recommended that the January meeting be moved to the IS`O'.
Motion seconded by Gray.
Motion carried 4 - 0.
""ERMS OF Schabacker commented that tonight would be his last meeting since he is stepping down from
OFFICE the Commission. He said that he and his wife are expecting another baby in April and that he
has been very busy. He stated that he has not submitted a letter for reappointment.
