MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 2, 2002
Some Commission members felt that this motion needed clarification so that if the appraised
value was too high, the City would not be bound to purchase it.
Sackett Glaser recommended that the entire Turrz7uist/Palmen site be considered for
acquisition by the City since the site is beneficial to our park system. However, the
Commission would like the opportunity to review this item again once a pure{:ase price is
determined to make sure that purchase of the property does not overly in:pact our park
needs in the City.
Motion seconded by Schabacker.
Motion carried 5 -1. Gray voted against.
CONCERTS Horwath stated that the Roseville Area Schools Jazz Band is available to perform on
Wednesday, July 17, 2002. She stated that she favors holding an ice cream social in
conjunction with the event. She asked about businesses within Little Canada who maybe
willing to donate ice cream. The Director indicated that there are several organizations that
he knows of who have sponsored ice cream socials in the past. He stated that he would do
some research before next month's meeting to see what is involved. He also stated that
solicitations can be sent to the business community asking for their donations. City staff will
be present to coordinate the event as well as Commission members. Advertisements could
be placed on Cable TV, on the web site, in the City's newsletter, and in the local newspaper.
This item will be placed on next month's agenda so the details of this event can be decided.
MEETING The Commission unanimously decided to change their July 4`h meeting date to Tuesday, June
CHANGE 25 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
RONDEAU Sanders stated that bids for Rondeau Park should be received in early June. The Commission
PARK felt that the neighborhood meeting could be held on June 25"'.
TRAIL Sanders presented the trail grant ranking details to the Commission for their review. Any
GRANT questions that the Commission has will be placed on next month's agenda for discussion.
GERVAIS Sanders outlined the three alternates received on paving of the trails at Gervais Mill Park.
MILL PARK Mariann Simmons, a resident from the area, stated that she is not in favor of blacktopping the
trails at Gervais Mill Park. She loves the natural appearance of the park. Sackett Glaser
agreed stating that there are enough parks with blacktopped trails, and Gervais Mill Park was
intentionally developed as a natural park.
The Director stated that the current wood chipped trails require much maintenance and are
very expensive to maintain. The Commission discussed other surfaces that could be used
which would give a more natural appearance. Sanders stated that a section of boardwalk in
the low area would fit in with the natural theme of the park and also solve the problem where
the trail is often under water.
