MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
June 6, 2002
The Director stated that he would make a few more contacts for donations. The event has
already been published in the City's newsletter and has been placed on our web site. A
notice will also be put on Little Canada's Cable Channel 16 and in the Review. The
Commission decided not to print flyers this year.
RONDEAU The Director reported that bids for this year's improvement projects came in at $1.5 million
PARK dollars with $103,000 of that total slated for Rondeau Park. This amount is about $16,000
under the estimated cost for the project. However, the contractor typically does street work
and the park work is such a small portion of the bid. City staff is currently negotiating with
the contractor on this issue. If the work is not performed this year, there will not be a need
for a neighborhood meeting this summer and we will re-bid the project in the winter.
Sanders presented proposals for playground equipment from several different vendors. Cost
for the equipment is estimated at $40,000. The Commission did not feel that a demonstration
from each vendor was necessary. They felt that City staff could select an appropriate vendor.
TRAIL Sanders asked if anyone had questions on the results of the trail grant application.
GRANT Schabacker commented that we were close to receiving the grant and there is not much more
we could do to increase regional significance. Sanders agreed stating that we will submit the
application again next year.
DIRECTOR The Director reported on the following:
REPORT
• A Stoneridge Court resident would like to buy a triangular piece of City property to
extend his backyard. The Director felt that it was okay to sell that small piece to the
resident. However, a neighborhood meeting may be called since there could be some
residents concerned about public property adjacent to their land going private.
• Sanders commented that the City should consider acquiring the Schletty wetland so that
the property can be City owned and protected. Possible connections could be made from
the Turnquist/Palmen property to the Schletty wetland using bog walks.
• The skating rink's parking lot on Demont Avenue was scheduled to be paned as part of
the improvement projects this year. A small path for field maintenance will connect this
parking lot to the ball fields at the top of the hill south of the rink. Sanders mentioned
that the parking lot at Spooner Park needs repair and there are erosion issues in the park
that need to be addressed. The Director stated that the Watershed District would be
fixing the erosion problems this summer.
• Schabacker asked if the Round Lake area of the Little Canada Road project was on hold.
The Director stated that this project has not been turned over yet to the City. The
contractor is still working on the project.
• The neighborhood meetings regarding the Gervais Beach area are completed. The
project will begin in 2003 and includes removal of the sheltered picnic area, replacement
of the beach building, and reconstruction of the parking lot and driveway.
PARK MAP Schabacker asked if there was an updated park map available for the Park Master Plan book.
UPDATE The map he has is dated 1998. Sanders said that the map has not been updated since then,
but he could easily change it. There have not been many changes since 1998.
