MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
FEBRUARY 18, 2016
Chair Miller asked if there was any further discussion relating to the City
Budget. The Director explained there was no further questions relating to
the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Darling asked if the Gervais Mill Park Entrance on Noel Drive would be
receiving a refresher this spring. The Director explained this would
depend on the Noel Drive Sidewalk, because the sidewalk may end up
going through the current space. Darling mentioned she had another idea
of adding birdhouses near the sitting space. Ray noted that the Edgerton
side could use a sitting space. Darling mentioned the Historical Society
maintains the entrance on the Noel Drive side. The Director explained the
Historical Society began maintaining it several years ago, but currently
one member in particular, Don Gagne, maintains the area by weeding and
planting new flowers. Darling noted this would be a good project to keep
in mind. The Director agreed and added the sign would need to be
replaced. Sullivan asked if the Le Petit had ever recognized the work
Gange does for the entrance. The Director explained he had, but maybe it
should be done again. Schletty thought it may also serve to encourage
other volunteers to help maintain park entrances.

Darling explained she thought it would be a good idea to create a
Canadian Days Float representing the Parks and Recreation Department.
She noted she had seen Little Canada Recreation Association floats in the
past, but thought it was important to also have a Department float. Schletty
inquired about the Parks and Recreation presence in Canadian Days. Chair
Miller explained the Parks and Recreation Department puts on the Ice
Cream Social the Thursday before Canadian Days. The Director added
that this was advertised in the Canadian Days agenda every year. Ray
thought a Parks and Recreation float would be a good idea and would like
to help. Darling explained her vision of the float was a family enjoying a
picnic, or a couple relaxing on a park bench. Horwath mentioned Katie
McGinnity and Don Bowman may like to help plan the float as well.
Schletty explained a better presence at Canadian Days may help raise
citizen awareness of the Commission. Horwath agreed it could help reach
current families involved in the recreation side of the department get their
voices heard. Darling agreed it could also help park users share their input.
Horwath mentioned he would like to see one of the Little Canada Parks
receive a regional sponsorship to help boost publicity. Chair Miller
wondered if during the May Park Tour, the Commission would like to
look into each park’s history and background. He thought this could be a
way for the Commission to begin generating new ideas instead of waiting
for opportunities.

CITY BUDGET
UPDATE
GARDEN
SITTING
SPACE ON
NOEL DRIVE
AT THE
ENTRANCE
TO GERVAIS
MILL PARK
PRESENCE IN
THE
CANADIAN
DAYS
PARADE
