MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
April 7, 2016
are tipped for younger groups. Joriman explained the problem lacrosse
teams are facing is the limited number of open fields and practice times.
Chair Miller asked if it would be possible to use the Little Canada
Elementary lower level outfields of the baseball fields as lacrosse fields.
The Director stated it is possible, but only one thing can be going on at the
same time. Chair Miller asked when the lacrosse season was. Joriman
stated it was from April through August. Joriman explained lacrosse fields
are constantly full and if there is any way to get more field space it would
be well utilized. Chair Miller asked Joriman if hockey rinks could be used
as a mixed use space. Joriman explained they would not be large enough,
but could be used for practice especially to use the boards to catch the
stray balls. Joriman also explained the first few practices are held indoors
to prevent the new grass from being torn up. Chair Miller asked if the east
side of Pioneer Park could be used. The Director explained it is currently
used as two small substandard soccer fields. The Director explained it is
hard to accommodate lacrosse and soccer because they use the same
spaces, but was confident the City would work to maximize field usage.
Joriman noted it helps to practice lacrosse near a school so they can use
the building to practice ball control. Chair Miller suggested multi use
boards near the skate park. Horwath, considering mixed uses, reminded
the Commission of Tom Ray’s idea of a dog park in the skating rinks
during the off season. Chair Miller explained it is important to maximize
the potential of all of the City’s public space and they would take these
projects into consideration.

The Director encouraged the Commission members to think of other
projects and ideas especially to promote the youth of Little Canada. He
explained the LCRA would certainly be open to hearing ideas that have
not yet come up. Horwath mentioned he had brought a Recreation
Management Magazine to the meeting which included many ideas for
public recreation spaces. Chair Miller suggested the Commission focus on
suggesting an idea to the Council each month regarding opportunities to
bring people together, specifically he referenced National Night Out.

Darling suggested touring the Old Fire Hall to imagine the potential of the
space. Chair Miller agreed, adding that he had not yet seen the warming
house. He suggested making that a part of the park tour. The Director
stated Bill Sanders had not been able to make the meeting, but told the
Director he would be coming on the park tour before the next meeting.
The Director mentioned the City Council has been looking at the Old Fire
Hall because the brick face is deteriorating and money was set aside in the
budget to repair the building. The Director explained the City Council is
looking into the future uses of the Old Fire Hall and is compiling a list of
current uses for the building.

OTHER
BUSINESS
