MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
June 2, 2016
land as it became available. Horwath made a motion to recommend the
Council have a Master Plan drawn up by Bill Sanders’ company with
ideas as stated in the minutes. Schletty seconded the motion. The motion
was unanimously approved.

Chair Miller reported the Commission had visited the Gervais Mill Park
Entrance before the meeting. Don Gagne was also in attendance for the
Park Tour, and had explained the importance of putting in a sidewalk
between the park entrance and the trail to curb inappropriate crossing in
that area, and buffer pedestrians from the cars turning around the corner.
Gagne, a resident of Little Canada, takes care of the garden area near the
entrance of Gervais Mill Park. Schletty reported the Commission had also
discussed putting an overlook in along the sidewalk facing the Gervais
Mill Creek, and replacing the guardrail with something more aesthetically
pleasing. The Director noted that having this additional section of
sidewalk would create safety for pedestrians and would be a relatively
inexpensive section of sidewalk. Sanders reported the Commission had
also discussed adding a water fountain and a dog drinking attachment.
Sanders suggested the water attachment could also serve as another source
to water the flowers. Darling mentioned she was surprised at the speed of
cars driving by in the area. She wondered if signage indicating the park
entrance could be posted. Schletty agreed the cars were driving too fast
around the corner. Sanders noted there are signs indicating the pedestrian
crossing, but maybe additional signage could be placed south of the
entrance. Horwath noted the cars speed was typical, but the traffic was
heavier than normal due to rush hour and road closures. Horwath
suggested possibly adding a speed bump. The Director explained he would
talk to Public Works about additional solutions and possibly adding
additional signage. Chair Miller called for a motion to be made regarding
the additional section of sidewalk. Schletty reasoned the Commission had
wanted more information on the legality of the guardrail. Darling
explained the Commission also wanted to see additional options and
estimates regarding the sidewalk itself, possibly with some type of
overlook. Horwath made a motion to see the cost estimates of a sidewalk
with an overlook running from the Park entrance to the trail. Ray seconded
the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

The Recreation Supervisor reported the Ice Cream Social is coming up
soon. The date is set for Thursday, July 28th from 6 – 8pm. She explained
Culvers would be providing root beer floats, and after receiving feedback
over email, the magician would come for an hour, the photo booth would
be there the entire time, and the firetrucks would be there for about 45
minutes. Chair Miller asked about the Jazz band. The Recreation
Supervisor explained time would be left open to accompany any students
who were able to play, although since the summer session will have
already concluded, there performance will not be formally included in the
GERVAIS
MILL
ENTRANCE
(NOEL DRIVE)
REVAMP
ICE CREAM
SOCIAL
PROGRAM
