MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
June 2, 2016
to make improvements to Gilbertson Field including new fencing, and
leveling out the ballfields, in partnership with the LCRA. Schletty
seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

Rocky Waite, Chairman of the Veterans Memorial Committee, addressed
the Council about his ideas and future plans for the site. Waite explained
the final touches are being put in place for the Veterans Memorial at
Round Lake. Currently the committee is working on the landscaping as
well as the final pavers for the Memorial. Waite explained the process had
taken much longer than anticipated, but had also been greater than anyone
had ever expected. He continued, while the Committee raised the funds
necessary for the project, it has been getting increasingly more difficult to
fund. In the future, Waite explained he would like to see park benches be
put along the Memorial. Waite also would like to see an observation deck
looking out towards Round Lake. Another idea he had was to have
military equipment near the Memorial to commemorate the Veterans.
Waite noted that he would speak with the Committee for additional ideas
and plans. The park will be returned to City jurisdiction at the August 9th
dedication ceremony. The Commission thanked Waite for his hard work
and dedication to the Veterans Memorial Project. Sanders echoed the
thank you, explaining Waite always held the Committee accountable for
staying on task and pushing the Committee forward. Sanders noted the
park is an outstanding compliment to the Little Canada Park System. He
also explained, the Committee had discussed forming a Master Plan to
continue the Committee’s vision into the future. Chair Miller explained
the Commission would continue to move forward with this project and
asked Waite to continue to bring ideas forward to share with the Parks
Commission as they arise. Waite mentioned he would also like to see
placards at the site recognizing the two Eagle Scout Projects which were
done at the Park.
Schletty noted the park benches should be a high priority item and the
Eagle Scout placards would be quick and relatively inexpensive to have
made. Chair Miller thought building a pier may need to be included in the
Master Plan because it would take more time and be much more
expensive. Horwath made a motion to recommend the Council get three
benches for the Park along with placards to acknowledge the work from
the Eagle Scout project. Darling seconded the motion. The motion was
unanimously approved.
Sullivan asked if community members ever donate park benches in honor
of loved ones. The Director explained they do, but if the project was to get
done this year, there wouldn’t be enough time to receive donations.
Darling commented it may be inappropriate to include community
member-sponsored benches at the Veterans Memorial Park unless they
were in memory of a Veteran. Schletty asked if there was a timeline to
acquire the properties near the Veterans Memorial Park to continue the
trail system. The Director explained the process was only to purchase the
VETERANS
MEMORIAL PARK
FUTUTRE PLANS
DISCUSSION
