Concern over proposed backyard chickens ordinance in Little Canada
Hello,
I hold concern over the proposed ordinance that would allow chickens to be raised in Little Canada,
which I was informed that it will be addressed at the council meeting on the 25th. I was raised on a farm
in Wisconsin and we raised 250 chickens a year. The eggs were sold and we burched the old chickens
and then sold the chicken meat to a local market as this was in the 1940's, when there was less
regulations that we have now. Have the people who want the chickens indicated their intent and
reasoning behind on why they would like backyard chickens (as pets, for locally grown food, etc.)? Most
lots in Little Canada are small to the point where their backyards wouldn't be able to large enough more
than a couple chickens. It can also be tricky to keep up with maintaining a chicken coop.
I believe that these people will not have enough chickens to have enough eggs for the family to eat.
What are these people going to do in the winter with the chickens? Also when the chickens get old,
what are they going to do with them (if they don't eat them, how do they plan to dispose of the remains)?
I am concerned if people will ensure to maintain the upkeep required for keeping chickens, as
Minneapolis has had issues with that (it did state that most owners did seem to maintain them though). I
do see that various suburbs also allow backyard chickens; have we contacted the city officials from
those municpialities to learn how their ordinances may have either negatively or positively impacted their
community?
According to a survey, many residents are apparently in favor of this, albeit I still hold multiple concerns
(as stated above) about having this becoming an ordinance.
Thanks,
Betty Davison
BETTY <davison.b@comcast.net>
Fri 1/13/2017 6:17 PM
To:*LC_council <LC_council@metro‐inet.us>;
