STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Heidi Heller, City Clerk
Jim Lee, Fire Marshal

DATE: March 17, 2017

RE: Ordinance 810 - Adopting Amendments to the Little Canada Fire Code

The current Little Canada City Code was written based on the 2007 State Fire Code. Since the
2015 Minnesota State Fire Code has now been adopted, the Fire Chief and Fire Marshal have
recommended that the City’s Fire Codes be updated to correlate to the State’s current fire code,
along with a few other sections in the Code that address various fire-related items. The Council
discussed these updates at the March 6, 2017 Council Workshop and agreed with the proposed
amendments, along with adopting several appendices. The Council chose not to adopt Appendix
D relating to fire apparatus access roads, and Appendix L relating to emergency responder radio
coverage. Further discussion about these appendices may happen in the future. Staff has drafted
Ordinance 810 that updates City Code Chapter 2000 in order to be consistent with the 2015
Minnesota State Fire Code, along with other code changes to City Code Chapters 600 and 1400
relating to burning regulations.

Staff recommends adopting Ordinance 810, amendments to Chapters 2000, 600 and 1400
relating to the fire code and burning regulations.
