STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator

DATE: April 7, 2017

RE: Fire Relief Benefit Increase

Pursuant to our contract with the Little Canada Fire Department, we have an agreement for funding
benefit increases for the Relief Association that runs from 2015 through 2019 (copy attached). Also
attached to this memo is a letter from Chief Smiley requesting an increase of $80 per year of service to
the current benefit level of $3,300 per year of service that went in to effect in 2015. With this
increase, the level of funding will remain above 110% as required by our agreement. (See modified
excerpt from Relief Association Audit prepared by Redpath & Company as of 12/31/16.)

Based on compliance with our agreement, staff recommends approval of the $80 increase in the benefit
level ($3,300 to $3,380 per year of service) as requested by the Little Canada Fire Deparment.

Cc: Don Smiley
Jamie Sucie
