1
Little Canada Fire Department Inc.
Memo
To: Joel Hanson – City Administrator, Little Canada City Council
From: Don Smiley – Fire Chief
Date: 4/7/2017
Re: Relief association benefit level increase
On March 9 the Little Canada Relief Association received their annual audit from Redpath (a
copy was provided). The funded ratio is 112.2 %. Per the fire relief funding/benefit increase
program a benefit level increase can be requested if the funding ratio is at or above 110%
after the increase.
The Little Canada Fire Department Board of Directors is requesting an $80 a year benefit
level increase starting in 2017.
I have one correction on the 2016 annual audit. On page 22 it shows the accrued liability as
$1,591,293. The actual amount should be $1,585,353. The discrepancy is due to the auditor
giving a full years’ service credit to the 3 new members we hired in November of 2016. Per
state statue you do not receive a full year’s credit unless you have over 6 months on the
department for auditing purposes.
Thank you for considering this request.
