STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director

DATE: May 19, 2017

RE: Security System at Fire Barns Rink Building

The new rink building at Fire Barns Park has been vandalized twice within the last nine months and
has been broken into an additional two times during the same time period. The last incident resulted in
significant damage to the building and the destruction of all of the bathroom fixtures. It appears it is
going to cost around $6000 to restore the building.
In light of the break-ins, staff received quotes to install and monitor a security system on the building.
Since the building is tucked away down the hill and well off the road it is difficult to keep an eye on.
A security system will hopefully scare off potential vandals in the future.
Two quotes were received. Sentry Systems was $544 for the system and $29.95 per month to monitor
the system. Electro-Watchman was $774 for the system and 24.95 per month for monitoring services.
The Electro-Watchman system offers a little more with two motion sensors versus one along with door
contacts. The less costly monthly monitoring would mean the Electro-Watchman system would
become a better value just after year three of installation. Electro-Watchman provides security at the
Public Works building on South Owasso Blvd. and fire monitoring at the new Public Works shop.
They have always been very responsive and easy to work with.
Staff recommends contracting with Electro-Watchman to install a security system at the Fire Barns
rink building at a cost of $774 with ongoing monitoring services at $24.95 per month.
