STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission

FROM: Bryce Shearen, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager

DATE: May 4, 2017

RE: Pickleball Court Options

Staff has received input from many surrounding cities and their experience with adding pickleball
Courts and has found the response to be very positive on the utilization of their pickleball courts.
The City has budgeted $17,250 for the work.

The dimensions of the Spooner Park Court are 105 ft by 118 ft., which is smaller than a standard
size of 110 ft by 120 ft. and limits how the area can accommodate different court options. Four
options that staff has found for the conversion of the tennis court at Spooner Park are included.

Option A
• Six dedicated pickleball courts
• 4-foot-high black vinyl fence installed down the middle running east to west
• Installation of six pickleball net posts
Option B
• 3 dedicated pickleball courts
• 1 dedicated Tennis Court
• 4-foot-high black vinyl fence installed down the middle running north to south
• Installation of three pickleball net posts
Option C
• 2 dedicated pickleball courts
• 4-foot-high Black Vinyl fence separating the two pickleball courts or use the existing net
as a divider
• Installation of two pickleball net posts
• No fence separating the pickleball Courts from the tennis courts
Option D
• Resurface Tennis Courts with dual purpose striping
• Add a strap to adjust the height of the net when in use for pickleball

Additional Notes:

Option B will not allow for the recommended 8-foot perimeter outside of the court and does not
offer the recommended north-to-south orientation of the courts. The center fence will also be in
close proximity to the tennis court which may affect play from both pickleball and tennis players.
