STAFF REPORT TO: Mayor Keis & Members of the City Council Little Canada Planning Commission FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator DATE: June 23, 2017 RE: Community Engagement Workshop At our 2017 Goal Setting Session, Community Engagement was our top ranked goal. It included a number of topics as indicated below: 1. Community Engagement: a. Increase voter turnout b. Community input on the Comp Plan Update c. Re-establish Community Pride Committee d. Outreach to diverse populations e. Youth engagement – connecting volunteers & youth to more activities, more youth activities f. Intergenerational connections g. Website link for local resources to help seniors in the community h. Promote the Little Canada Business Registry List i. Ensure public input on county road improvement projects We will start the workshop by reviewing the attached information provided by Steve Grittman dealing with the Comprehensive Plan update. (It should be noted that Robert Kost of SEH and Steve met with Staff earlier this week to discuss engagement activities. Mr. Kost will be presenting his information to the Parks & Recreation Commission at a workshop to be held before their next meeting.) After discussing the Comp Plan engagement process, will we then discuss the other items noted above. Here is some background information or food for thought on those items: a) Increase Voter Turnout – As has been previously discussed, voter turnout varies greatly from Presidential and non-Presidential election years. Regardless, there are things we can do to encourage greater voter participation. Here are a few ideas staff came up with: • Use Social Media, website, newsletter, and Channel 16 to inform residents of polling locations, election dates, and precinct info & maps. • Using the same methods above, promote early voter registration through the Secretary of State’s website at: https://mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us/VoterRegistration/VoterRegistrationMain.aspx
