MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
June 7, 2017
Council and the City Administrator attend many Night to Unite events and
the Commission could join in. Chair Miller said it would also be good to
use social media to get the word out. Kost stated he would prepare a draft
survey for the next meeting so that he would have time to finalize the
survey before it went live about a week before Canadian Days.

Kost suggested opening up the meeting to a round robin to discuss the
Commission’s ideas and comments on current and future park needs.

Horwath stated his vision for the wow park, is to create a theme,
potentially something like voyageur, to represent the community’s history,
and work it into Pioneer Park. He also proposed a green fitness idea to put
more of an emphasis on nature. Horwath also noted that an adult park
structure like a ninja warrior course, due to its popularity, could be an
interesting attraction. He stressed that he wanted Little Canada to be more
than a drive through city, and by creating a destination like a wow factor
in Pioneer Park would be a good first step. Horwath also pointed out
future park structures need more ADA accessibility.

Darling stated the best park area in Little Canada, from her perspective, is
the Firefighter’s Historical Trail. She noted its quiet, reflective atmosphere
was something that Little Canada could use more of, or expand on.
Darling suggested adding additional benches, and tables to allow for
spaces to write or read. She agreed green exercise is popular right now.

Ray stated Pioneer Park covers a large amount of space, and the pavilion
is rather small in comparison. He suggested creating an additional park
shelter, much like the one at Spooner Park, near the parking lot at Pioneer
Park. Chu reminded the Commission that if more park features are brought
to Pioneer, it may be necessary to add additional parking. Schletty asked
the Commission if their vision was to attract Little Canada residents to the
park, or to be a regional attraction. He noted that Centerville is a major
thoroughfare and a wow factor park would likely attract a regional
audience. Kost asked if Centerville Road was a county road. The City
Administrator noted it was.

Schletty stated he wanted to hear more opportunities related to biking. He
explained trails in Little Canada are something the City should be proud
of, but many busy streets bisect the City creating a challenge. Schletty
indicated he would like to see better bikeability within the City. Horwath
commented the City feels segmented. Schletty noted Little Canada is very
close to the Gateway Trail, and more connections to the trail would be
great. Horwath stated that the Thunder Bay Trail currently ends very
abruptly due to property challenges, but this has created an awkward dead
zone. He would like to see more opportunities regarding how this trail
could be connected to Pioneer and Spooner Park. Kost stated biking has
