STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director

DATE: August 18, 2017

RE: Staining of Spooner Park and Pioneer Park Shelters
The woodwork at the upper shelter at Spooner Park and the pavilion at Pioneer Park are both in need
of staining. Quotes were received from two companies to perform the work.
Fresh Paint: $8,820.00 per building
Best Painting & Cedar Specialists: $6,500.00 per building plus $900 to paint the posts at Pioneer
Based on the quotes received staff recommends awarding the project to Best Painting & Cedar
Specialists for a total of $13,900.00. Best Painting also proposed a more thorough process including
pressure washing, scraping of loose paint/stain, masking off all areas not to be stained, caulking, and
nailing down loose boards. The 2017 Capital Improvement budget includes $10,000 for staining the
upper shelter. After inspecting the Pioneer Park pavilion it was determined that both buildings should
be stained and a better value is gained by staining both buildings in 2017.
