STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council

FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: September 8, 2017

RE: Old Fire Hall Evaluation Committee Notes – Meeting II

The Old Fire Hall Evaluation Committee consisting of the members listed below met at the OFH on
Wednesday, August 30th.

Committee Members in Attendance:
• Little Canada Historical Society – Don Gagne
• Little Canada Recreation Association – Jon Joriman
• Little Canada Fire Department – Chief Don Smiley
• Parks & Recreation Commission – Peter Schletty
• Citizen at Large – Dick Flipp (Brooks Avenue resident)
• City Council Member – Mike McGraw
• City Council Member – Tom Fischer
• Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager – Bryce Shearen
• Public Works Director – Bill Dircks
• City Administrator – Joel Hanson

Committee Members Absent:
• Planning Commission – Bill Buesing (architecture background)
• St. John’s Church – Kevin Hamernick

The committee was provided with last year’s meeting summary and the other background materials.
They were asked to make a recommendation on the exterior finish program for the property.
The consensus recommendations of the Committee to the City Council are as follows:

• Try to match the original appearance of the building as closely as reasonably possible.
• The exterior brick surface on the front of the building should be replaced. Best efforts should
be made to match the existing brick as closely as possible. (Previous estimates placed that cost
at around $85,000)
• The remaining three sides of the building should be cleaned (removed loose paint), repair wall
cracks, replace cracked block, replaced broken glass block with solid block to eliminate
maintenance issue given they do not provide essential lighting for the upper level, make sure
roof flashing is in good shape and possibly replace it with tile like originally existed. Repaint
three exterior walls.
• We should install “old style” lights over doors to more closely approximate how the building
originally looked. (See photo attached) They should be LED and red in color.
