MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 12, 2002
also noted that there was a 7% increase in library usage from the year
2000 to 2001 and that over 3 million items were checked out of County
libraries during 2001. The Roseville Library was the busiest library in the
State during 2000 with 1.183 million pieces checked out and over 1.2
million checked out during 2001.
Scaize asked if the County was planning to maintain the current level of
library services.
Commissioner Wiesner indicated that the County Board is just beginning
the 2003 Budget process and are looking at several different scenarios.
The worst-case scenario at this point would be a 7% Budget cut i^ the
overall County budget. Wiessner also indicated that the Library Board has
said that rather than severely cut hours, it may be necessary to close three
libraries under the 7% budget cut scenario. Wiessner reported that to
maintain the current level of library services may mean a 4.2% increase in
the library portion of the budget.
Fahey noted that ultimately the County Board will make a decision on this
issue. 1-lowever, he felt that library service was a great resow ce and
quality of life issue. Fahey noted that given the vast amounts of County
dollars going to human services, it was his feeling that the County should
provide adequate funding to maintain the current levels of library services.
Fahey introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RE.SOL(ITION NO. 2002-G-730 -SUPPORTING TIFF. REIMS&Y
COUNTI'l.II3RARY'S 2003 REQUEST TO MA/NTAIN CURRENT
I_EVEI S OF OPERAT/ON AT ITS FACTL]T7ES
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by LaValle.
Ayes (4) Fahey, LaValle, Scalze, Montour.
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
At this point i^ the meeting, Council Member Anderson returned to the
Cowicil Chambers.
I3US BENCH. Roland Danielson, U.S. Bench, appeared before the Council and noted that
ISSUh,'S his company has been in business for 56 years and operated in Little
Canada for 28 years. Danielson relayed some of the recent history relative
to bus benches in Little Canada, and noted that U.S. Bench recently
acquired the other bench company that just last fall placed benches within
the City. Danielson reported that U S. Bench has removed all its bus
4
