Principal arterials consist of interstate
freeways and other highways. Principal arterials connect the metro region with other parts of the
state and the country and are the primary carriers of freight traffic.
Principal arterials in Little Canada include Interstate 35 East, Interstate 694, and Highway 36.
Minor Arterials: Minor arterials supplement the freeway/interstate system and handles the second
greatest load of vehicle trips. Like primary arterials, these roadways are primarily designed to
move vehicles, not necessarily to provide access to local land. They support access to traffic
generators, employment hubs, and freight terminals, as well as connecting rural communities
where densities do not merit primary arterials. Minor arterials are split into larger a minor arterials
and other arterials.
Amongst a minor arterials, there are relievers and augmentors. Relievers provide supplementary
capacity for congested principal arterials and run parallel to them. Augmentors supplement
arterials in serving denser neighborhoods, or in currently redeveloping areas.
A Minor arterials in Little Canada include County Road 49, CR 23, CR25, and CR 58. Other
arterials include County Road 16, CR 19, CR 22 and the portion of CR 21 east of Interstate 35E.
Collectors: Collectors are the third largest road classification in terms of the traffic they carry.
Whereas the arterials are primarily meant to move traffic, collectors balance this mobility with
accessibility to local areas. Short trips are the norm for these roadways, which connect
neighborhoods, commercial centers, and larger arterials. Collectors are divided into major and
