MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
NOVEMBER 20, 2002
Scalze expressed concern with the day old bakery concept and
indicated that her preference would be a retail operation with a seating
area for in-store dining. McNaught reported that the product that will
be sold at this location will be first-rate product.
Scalze indicated that this is a wonderful commercial area and the
City's vision for this area was not to have outlets for day old goods.
The vision was for afamily-style restaurant. McNaught indicated that
Taste of Scandinavia has a reputation it wants to uphold and will not
be selling inferior products.
Scalze again commented on the vision for a bustling retail area and
that she would like to see a wonderful bakery with an indoor dining
area. Scalze stated that the fact that the bakery will be 90%
bakery/distribution center concerns her. Scalze felt that a fine bakery
with a restaurant component was just what the City needs.
McNaught indicated that Taste of Scandinavia is very customer and
service oriented. Their current bakery location is at their North Oaks
location. That location will be converted into a bakery cafe, and they
would like to relocate the bakery function to the .Market .Place
Shopping Center. McNaught noted that there is an existing coffee
shop at the shopping center that they do not want to compete with. He
indicated that at their other locations, coffee sales account for 25% of
their retail sales. Therefore, the proposal is for the 10% retail area to
consist of walk-in sales only with no sit-down eating area.
Mark Hotzler, owner of the Market Place Shopping Center, indicated
that the coffee shop at the center is doing well. If it proves successful,
the owner would like to expand the shop. Hotzler indicated, however,
that he has not prevented Taste of Scandinavia from having a seating
area, he has only requested it.
The City Administrator asked about the future addition of the seating
area should the coffee shop relocate. McNaught indicated that they
would have enough space to add the seating area in the future.
Montour asked about truck deliveries. McNaught reported that they
have two truck deliveries per day of bakery ingredients. These trucks
are in and out by 8 a.m. They also have two vans that will pick up
product and deliver to their retail locations. These vans are in and out
by 4:30 a. m. McNaught reported that truck and van access is via the
north drive behind Snyders and that they would be using the existing
truck dock on the north side of the building.
