STAFF REPORT
TO:Mayor Keis and Members of City Council
FROM:Bill Dircks, Public Works Director
DATE:September 6, 2018
RE:Joint Repair at Fire Barns Skate Park
The concrete slab for the skate park has longitudinal joints that have a wide enough gap to cause
problems for skateboarders. The cracks have been caulked in the past but the caulk hasn’t held up very
well with the use and weather changes. Staff contacted Sierra Exteriors to get a quote for placing an
epoxy mortar in the joints, which should be a more permanent solution than the caulk. The product is
placed in the joint and left high and then is ground down so it is flush with the concrete. The cost of
the work was quoted at $2200. Staff attempted to obtain a quote for the same type of work from a
couple of other contractors but it is specialty work and the other contractors did not show any interest.
For comparison sake, caulking the joints costs around $1200 so if the epoxy mortar is a permanent
solution there should be a quick payback for the extra up front cost.
Staff recommends approving the $2200 quote from Sierra Exteriors to fill in the joints with epoxy
mortar.
