STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of City Council
FROM: Chris Heineman, City Administrator

DATE: November 14, 2018

RE: Retail Trade Analysis for Little Canada

The University of Minnesota Extension provides a service to help local communities understand and
strengthen their local retail market. This service, known as retail trade analysis, helps communities
strengthen their local marketplace by:
• Providing accurate local sales data
• Helping your community plan for business expansion or recruitment
• Comparing your community sales data to others
• Assessing the strengths and opportunities of your local businesses
In an effort to establish some basic background information on retail market demand in Little Canada,
I have partnered with the U of M Extension Service to conduct a Retail Trade Analysis report for the
City of Little Canada. This will not provide the level of detail that is needed to analyze specific sites,
but it should help staff and elected officials understand the current market forces in our region.
Attached is a detailed market analysis for your review. This can be used to understand which retailers
attract business to Little Canada, and what types of businesses Little Canada residents leave the City to
meet their needs. I have found that this type of analysis provides a general groundwork for future
development discussions throughout the community.
A representative from Minnesota Extension (Michael Darger) will be in attendance at the meeting to
walk through the report and answer any questions you may have.
