MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 1, 2008
estimated amount. The lowest bid was from Killmer Electric for $65,900.00. The bids will be
given to the City Council to approve and award the contract. This is a city project and was bid
as one project for both the tennis courts and the rink lighting.
ARBOR DAY Morelan stated that Arbor Day was celebrated on April 18`x' at 1:00 p.m. at Spooner Park. The
program consisted of tree plantings with the help of 3`~ and 4`~' grade students from Little
Canada Elementary and St. John's School along with some music selections and comments
from Chair Davis and Mayor Blesener. There was a good turn out for the ceremony in spite of
the weather.
OTHER Chair Davis reported she is on a committee for the Ramsey County Active Living Group.
The group is comprised of members from the DNR, cities, counties and watershed districts. The
committee strives to have residents have more physical activity in their daily lives. She will
report back to the commission on the information from the meetings.
Davis said this group, Active Living Ramsey County, is very interested in the Little
Canada Parks and Recreation committee's work in regards to trails. In particular they
have an interest in the proposed pedestrian bridge over Highway 36 due to its
connection to the Gateway Trail. The Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance
Program, part of the National Park Service, has funding available for planning
trails. Morelan will check into any funding available for project implementation.
Morelan reported Mayor Blesener spoke to the 2"d grade class at the Little Canada Elementary
School and asked for input from the students on how the City of Little Canada could be
improved. Some of the comments included a need for more basketball courts, more baseball
fields, new park equipment, more benches on trails, more sidewalks and an excitement for the
new skate park.
A flyer from the Ramsey-County Watershed District about an Environmental Forum with Mark
Seeley, author of "Minnesota Weather Almanac" for May 5, 2008, was distributed to each
commissioner. The spring/summer Youth Activities Registration flyer was also distributed.
Morelan reported that removing buckthorn, tree trimming, Public Work and Park & Recreation
building cleaning, trail trash pick-up, grass cutting, equipment moving, and getting ball fields
ready for teams have been a few projects the Department of Correction work crew have been
doing. Morelan stated they have been a great help since our part-time summer workers have not
started yet.
Steinwall asked if the city could put plants in the high planters that would drape over the sides
of the planter. Morelan stated the pots in the past have been too shallow to plant larger, draping
flowers, but they have purchased different planters for this year that are deeper so that request
might be possible.
Davis inquired about the progress with a park around Round Lake. Morelan reported the city
has purchased some houses already and will probably look into purchasing the remaining
houses when they become available.
