MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
July 8, 2008
OF OFH RINK It appears St. John's Church is willing to work with us in allowing us to relocate the freestyle
ice skating rink to the south of the hockey rink. They will be having another meeting with St.
John's staff in the near future.
LIGHTING Morelan stated there is not much to report yet as the contracts have been awarded, but no
PROJECTS work has been completed yet.
OTHER Morelan reported that a group of neighborhood residents around the Gervais Mill Pond have
formed an organization called the Friends of Gervais Creek & Ponds and have established a
website at fogcap.org. They have made a request to put up signage in the park for their
organization. They cleaned up the park on a very chilly Earth Day on Apri122, 2008. They are
also working with the Ramsey County Watershed District.
Morelan announced that the Canadian Days buttons are now on sale at the city desk counter for
$2.00 each.
ICE CREAM Steinert reported it will be held at Spooner Park lower shelter on Thursday, July 31, 2008.
SOCIAL He had not received a confirmation from the Roseville Parks & Recreation contact person,
Roxanne, about the puppet show yet, but should very soon. Steinert reported that the fire trucks
are set but has not heard back from the K-9 unit yet. Morelan has not heard from A&W on the
root beer either, but will finalize very soon. The clowns also have not been finalized. Once
confirmation is received on these, the flier will be printed and available for the commissioners
to distribute, along with being put on the website and cable channel.
Steinert confirmed with Fleischhacker that he will assist with finalizing and coordinating the
actual event since he will be absent. Chair Davis stated she will be unable to attend also.
OTHER Sanders commented on the DNR grants, stating the cycle begins in February of each year.
Davis asked if we could apply for all grants with one application. Sanders stated that we would
probably choose one this fall and submit an application for that grant. Davis asked Sanders if a
city map with street names could be made that would include the proposed trails by priority
number. Sanders agreed that at times the location of these trails gets confusing and stated he
could make that requested map and have it put on the website also.
Maida asked Sanders about the Parks & Recreation Comprehensive Plan. Sanders stated he is
working with the city on this project and is planning to schedule a meeting this fall to go
forward with the review of the draft. He is projecting that the Parks & Recreation Commission
would probably approve the draft in September and then give it to the city council to approve.
Maida expressed a concern with the trails priority list. He asked if there was a way to track how
much traffic there is on each projected trail. He thought, maybe through the census, that
someone could distinguish where the largest populations of children are within the city. Sanders
replied that there is probably no way to detect the amount of haffic unless you did a hand count.
Other discussion included whether it was feasible to do a community survey, newspaper article,
website poll, or a booth at Canadian Days to survey the residents' ranking of the trail
importance. Some commissioners emphasized that once the trail was completed there would be
an increased amount of traffic, so there is not much importance to the traffic count before the
Page 3 of 4
