STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks & Recreation Commission

FROM: Bryce Shearen, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager

DATE: February 1, 2019

RE: Sap Run 5K

In the effort to continually expand community offerings and to get people active and involved in
the community while highlighting some of the great features the City has to offer, staff has been
working on a 5K run event that will take place this spring. The event is going to be the Sap Run
5K, which was inspired by the maple leaf in our City’s logo (from our French-Canadian history)
as well as sap running in maple trees after the thaw of the long winter freeze.

The course will be around the beautiful Lake Gervais, which is exactly five kilometers. The
course will receive USA Track & Field (USATF) certification from a USATF Road Course
Certifier. Staff has also enlisted the services of Anderson Race Management (ARM) company to
help organize and market the event. With the USATF certification and the professional race
management company onboard, this event will appeal to both the beginner and expert level
runners in the community.

As staff continues to work on the planning and marketing of the event, volunteer and sponsorship
opportunities may be available. Any Commissioners interested in volunteering should contact
the Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager.
