MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
September 6, 2001
• The parks maintenance building was also repainted. The brick on the building should be
cleaned and resealed.
• Adult fall softball is underway. There are three leagues -Wednesday Women's,
Wednesday Men's, and Thursday Men's.
• Roseville Parks & Recreation has requested the temporary use of Pioneer Park on
Tuesday evenings for their football program. In exchange for use of this facility, they
have agreed to do the weekly striping of our soccer field in that park.
• A girl scout approached the Director about planting a butterfly garden at Pioneer Park.
The garden is on the Centerville side, it is 9' x 9', and has a fence around it. The girl
scout has since planted some plants and will perform maintenance on the garden.
OTHER Sanders asked about the status of the Capitol View Learning Center. He was wondering who
is using that building. The Director stated that 916 maintains the use of that facility, 623
retained use of the outdoor areas such as the tennis courts acid ballf elds, and he felt that
portions of the building are rented out to other organizations. He indicated that the pool area
was replaced with a new addition to the school.
Broten commented that there is ragweed around the Aspen Pond and it is giving him a rash.
It's also hard on people who suffer from hay fever. Some of the weeds are 7-8 feet tall. The
Director stated that he will have Parks Maintenance look into this.
Schabacker stated that the Rice Street Task Force met last night, but he was unable to attend
due to a conflict with school. He stated that he has school on Mondays and Wednesdays so if
future meetings are held on those nights, he cannot attend. He felt that another member of
the Commission should attend in his place if he cannot make the meetings. Schabacker also
mentioned that he would not be able to attend the October Commission meeting due to
another conflict.
Steinert mentioned that a resident asked him if the Parks & Recreation Commission made the
decision to eliminate parking on Australian Avenue because of the trail connection. Sackett-
Glaser stated the Commission was not involved in that decision.
Steinert also inquired as to the purpose of the curb cut on Desoto Street in the northeast
corner of Pioneer Park. The Director stated that the curb cut was installed for a future trail
connection, and since there are now more people to justify the comrection, maybe it should
be added to a trail project for next year. The Commission agreed since it seems to get a lot of
use.
Sackett Glaser stated that she has noticed a lot of buckthorn around the city and wondered if
the city ever gets involved in its removal. The Director stated that the city does not have an
ongoing project for its removal, but we could educate the public of the problems associated
with it through the newsletter with the hope that residents would tape steps to remove it from
their properties.
