MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 9, 2000
Vitale felt that the County should have greater participation in the cost of
the project.
Fahey pointed out that the County is already paying approximately 40% of
the cost of the improvement.
Vitale indicated that most of the traffic on Little Canada Road is going to
Roseville. Vitale questioned the need for turning lanes along Little
Canada Road.
Scalze pointed out that some have indicated the need to improve Little
Canada Road to four lanes.
Fahey questioned the need for the median at Rice Street adjacent to The
Venetian Inn property.
The City Engineer pointed out that the median would prevent left turns
onto Little Canada Road near its intersection with Rice Street. However,
an alternate would be to paint a double yellow line on the road in that
location.
Morelan asked ]row the original plan for reconstructing Little Canada
Road would impact The Venetian property. John Vitale pointed out that if
the City went ahead with that plan, it would be buying The Venetian given
all its parking on the north side of the building would be eliminated.
Morelan asked if there were other alternatives for additional parking.
Vitale indicated that the Rutzick property could be purchased for parking,
however, this would put parking too far from the building.
Fahey felt it might not be perfect planning to eliminate the median,
however, noted that The Venetian is an existing business that has operated
from this site without any curb cuts delineating access to Little Canada
Road and without any problems.
Morelan indicated that he was not interested in spending an extra
$215,000 on Little Canada Road two years from now when a
redevelopment project comes in. Fahey pointed out that if Little Canada
Road is functional, the City may never have to modify it. It will depend
on how the area redevelops.
Fahey again questioned the need for the median at Rice Street given that it
will impact The Venetian Inn property and perhaps its redevelopment.
Without the median, there will be more flexibility when redevelopment
occurs.
