MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
NOVEMBER 8, 2000
Morelan pointed out the comments in the report relating to the wide curb
cut along Country Drive for the existing Public Works Garage. Oertel
reviewed the layout of the facility and pointed out that given the need to
back trucks into the building and the limited distance from the building to
the front property line, the wide curb cut is necessary. However, this is
not an ideal situation from a safety standpoint.
Fahey asked if the Public Works Garage has outlived its useful life and if
it would be better to construct a new facility than to put $150,000 in
improvements in the existing structure.
Scalze pointed out that the City also has the facilities at the Old Fire Hall
that includes a meeting room. Scalze felt that the City was fortunate to
have the two sites on either side of the freeway, given that the City is
divided in two by the freeway system.
Morelan asked if the Public Works Director felt it was preferable to have
these facilities combined into one site.
The Director indicated that he was unsure and pointed out that parks
maintenance will come under the direction of the Parks & Recreation
Director beginning in January.
Pedersen asked what the life expectancy of the Public Works Garage was.
Oertel indicated that the life expectancy of a metal building such as this
was between 20 and 30 years. Oertel pointed out that the shell of the
Public Works building is deteriorating. He also indicated that a building
such as this is fairly inflexible from the standpoint of making
modif cations to it.
LaValle suggested that the Council needed some hard costs before it could
make a decision on which option was the right one to pursue.
Oertel pointed out the issue of storage in the mezzanine area of the
building and again indicated that it would not be easy to modify the
existing Public Works Garage. There is also the need to upgrade the
rooms used for various staff functions.
Morelan asked if the building was usable for another purpose and if it had
any resale value. Oertel felt that there were many shop uses that the
building could be used for. Pedersen asked why the building would work
for other shop uses and not the Public Works function.
