MINUTES <br />Parks & Recreation Commission <br />January 6, 2000 <br />llIRECTOR'S The DirecCOr stated thaC registration was already held for youth gymnasCics, skating lessons, <br />REPORT basketball clinic, kids exercise, and babysitter safety. However, Che CiCy is still accepting <br />registrations in each of these a~•eas. The City is in the process of registration for girls' <br />fastpiteh softball for ages 9-18. <br />MUSIC IN The Director stated that former Commission Member Muriel Bianchi was in charge of <br />THE PARK arranging concerts in the park for Che past few years. The concerts took place in Spooner <br />Park and usually occurred on Wednesday nights in July. Each concert lasted about one hour. <br />The CiCy provides initial funding for this program, with additional funds solicited from non- <br />profit organizations. <br />Since Bianchi has resigned from the Commission, a new person is needed to take over her <br />duties. Bianchi has stated Chat she will work with thaC person to help them get acquainted <br />with the process. Anderson asked the Commission members to think about possibly <br />assuming this role and interested persons should contact the Director or Anderson before the <br />next meeCing Co let Chem know. They can then put the interested person in Couch wiCh <br />Bianchi. <br />Anderson encouraged members to come up with ideas on other bands or types of music. <br />Danielson suggested the band JB Leighton. Anderson encouraged her to find out what they <br />would charge. He stated that the Commission has been trying to provide a variety of music <br />for all different age groups. Groups solicited in the past have included the Teddy Bear Band, <br />Splatter Sisters, Hektor and the Gas Giants, Michael Monroe, and the Roseville High School <br />Jazz Band. With the exception of Michael Monroe, the Teddy Bear Band usually has been <br />the most costly group, averaging about $450 a performance. <br />This item will be discussed again at Che nexC meeCing. <br />OTHER The Director stated thaC concern was expressed at a recenC Council meeting about turnover on <br />the Commission and asked for the Commission's comments on the matter. The Commission <br />felt that the reasons for recent turnover included lack of time, moving out of the city, and <br />family reasons. Anderson wanted to sCress Co Che Council thaC Che Commission meetings <br />have historically been amicable, and he has not heard negative comments from the members. <br />He fe1C thaC former members did noC leave due to contention. He commented ChaC Che <br />Commission has been a stable one with the exception of the last couple of years. Sanders <br />agreed and said ChaC Che Commission has been an effective working group. <br />Anderson stated that the benefit of turnover is receiving new ideas from new members. He <br />encouraged the new members to present ideas and thoughts. Not every idea comes to <br />fruition, but the Commission is always willing to discuss them.
