MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 4, 2000
Anderson felt that the Commission should work through the budget process, then meet with
the Council for discussions. The Director suggested holding a workshop with the Council
the evening of the Council's second meeting in August. Anderson agreed and stated that the
Commission should begin thinking about ideas for inclusion in the budget.
GOAL The Director stated that staff will be meeting on Tuesday to put together action plans on
SETTING implementing the eight goals identified at the goal setting session held last month. Once
these plans have been established, they will be given to the Council for approval.
JACKSON Sanders presented three plans to the Commission on the proposed Jackson Street park. The
PARK first was just a basic plan showing the park property. The second was a plan showing a trail
through the middle of the park from Jackson Street to the Provinces Apartments. This plan
contained a gazebo in the middle of it with play areas and a half basketball court. There was
also a plain lawn area with a walkway around it. Additionally, a bridge with arock/water
garden area was added to address drainage issues. The third plan was a more informal plan
showing a half basketball court, play area, and open lawn space.
Schabacher expressed concern with the woodchips/trees that were buried on the park
property. He felt that settling will occur.
Sanders commented that connection to the Waterworks trail will be achieved via Jackson
Street. He mentioned that he would prefer asphalt for the park trails.
Sanders stated that he favors the second p]au. He felt it would be ideal for the new homes to
overlook the bridge/garden area. Sackett Glaser also felt that the second plan was nice.
Sackett Glaser asked if there were other features the Commission desired for the park. The
following ideas were presented:
• Sand volleyball court
• Sliding hills for children
• Flower garden
• Climbing wall for children
• Fitness stations
Gray asked about parking at the park. The Director stated that the park will be designed as a
neighborhood park so parking would not be necessary. Having on-site parking would
encourage outside use. However, there is some street parking available.
Anderson asked that notices be sent out to neighbors inviting them to next month's meeting.
He suggested holding the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. with a limited agenda, and then having
the neighborhood meeting take place at 7:30 p.m. A notice should also be placed on cable
television.
