Steve Grittman
March 31, 2000
':. Page 2
Billiard Background
For many years, my hobby has been pool and 3-cushion billiards. I became a member of
the United States Billiard Association (USBA) in 1988 and was elected its national Secretary in
1992, serving for six consecutive years. In my capacity as Secretary of the USBA, I traveled
throughout the United States promoting 3-cushion billiards and staging billiard tournaments, from
local and regional competitions to major tournaments, including each annual U.S. National
Championship. As tournament director, I organized and conducted every major 3-cushion billiard
tournament in the U.S. between 1992 and1998. Also, I am special advisor and one of the
founding members of the Carom Corner, the current United States professional 3-cushion billiard
tour. In addition, I have consulted with and assisted billiard room operators throughout the U.S.
to open six billiard rooms in the past ten years.
Additionally, I have officiated at Women's Professional Billiard Association (WPBA)
tournaments. The WPBA has a strong following among both women and men throughout the
United States, and WPBA tournaments can be seen regularly on ESPN television. It is significant
that, as recently reported by The Billiara' Congress of America (BCA), women are showing a
larger percentage of increase in participation in cue sports than men. Also according to the BCA,
"the reimaging period of billiazds, beginning in 1987, has lead to growth in the sport across the
entire spectrum of social, economic, age and gender categories, indicating that the old stereotypes
of the industry are gone, and that all segments of the public, including women and families, find
the new billiard clubs acceptable and desirable forums of social activity."
Personal Background
I was born and raised in Minneapolis. I attended St. John's Preparatory School in
Collegeville, and graduated from Benilde High School. I attended the University of Minnesota
and beginning in 1962, worked for the City of Minneapolis, Municipal Building Commission, as a
janitor and night watchman at City Hall. I became a Hennepin County Deputy Sheriff and worked
for two yeazs as a bailiff in the courts. I then worked for five yeazs as an investigator for the State
of Minnesota Public Defender, and in 1979 became a licensed private detective in the State of
Minnesota.
For the past 21 years, I have worked as a private detective in the State of Minnesota and
subsequently in the State of Illinois, almost exclusively investigating plaintiffs' class action
antitrust and securities fraud matters. We lived in Chicago for the past 15 years but my wife and I
had always planned to move back to our hometown of Minneapolis, and we did so in March
1999. We bought a home in Southwest Minneapolis in September 1999. My wife, Diane,
graduated from the Academy of Holy Angels and attended the University of Minnesota. She
worked for 15 years as a litigation paralegal at the law firm of Gould & Ratner in Chicago, and
Page 31
