Public Works Equipment
Highlights of the 2020 Public Works Department equipment purchases are as follows:
Large Dump Truck:
There were three pickup trucks and a large dump truck budgeted for replacement in 2021 and
only some minor equipment programmed for 2020. In order to spread the trucks out over more
time, the decision was made to move the large dump truck up to 2020. The new truck will
replace the 2006 Sterling single axle dump truck currently in the fleet. This truck will be used
for plowing and de-icing in the winter and hauling asphalt, dirt, brush, and other materials in the
summer months.
Staff is looking at purchasing an International chassis similar to the other large dump truck that
was purchased in 2015, which will then be outfitted with a dump box, front plow, wing plow,
salt spreader, and other accessories. All items are on the Minnesota State Purchasing Contract
and the anticipated price for the chassis and all equipment is around $190,000. It is anticipated
that the 2006 dump truck will sell for around $40,000.
Small Equipment:
• Generator: The 2000 Caterpillar 200 kW generator is scheduled for major maintenance
after 20 years. Staff had its generator maintenance vendor look at it, and an estimate of
$10,000 was provided for the work necessary. The generator is not used very much and
should have plenty of life left in it. The cost of a new one would be more than $50,000
so it makes sense to give it a major overhaul and keep it in service.
• Plate Packer: The 2000 Mikasa plate packer is scheduled to be replaced. The packer is
used for small asphalt patches as well as for packing gravel and backfilled areas. The
anticipated cost is $2500.
• Lely Fertilizer Spreader: The 2005 spreader is scheduled to be replaced. The spreader is
used for fertilizing city-maintained grass areas. The anticipated cost is $5,000.
• Scissor Lift: The new Public Works shop has tall ceilings and there are many light bulbs
and lots of HVAC equipment located at the ceiling level or higher. Staff is proposing to
purchase a used scissor lift that will enable one or two workers to safely reach all of the
equipment up near the ceiling. The anticipated price of a used scissor lift is $6,000.

Future Equipment Purchases:
Moving forward, the Public works Department will continue to follow its schedule for replacing
trucks and equipment. There are two pickup trucks and a Toolcat scheduled for 2021, a pickup
and skid-steer in 2022, a pickup, Toolcat, air compressor, and wood chipper scheduled for 2023,
and a pickup and potentially a loader/backhoe in 2024. There are small equipment purchases
scheduled for each of those years as well.
