Name: Little Canada Road Pavers Project –Pedestrian Crossing Analysis <br />Date: April 16, 2020 <br />Page: 4 <br /> <br /> <br />Facing West <br /> <br />Crossing Alternatives and Destinations <br />This crossing is situated adjacent to Veterans Memorial Park and Round Lake on the south side of Little <br />Canada Road. There are many destinations on the north side of the road here, including the bowling alley, <br />numerous commercial establishments in the northeast corner, and residential buildings to the north and <br />southwest. There is a notable connection between residential on both sides of the roadway and different <br />destinations that will draw pedestrians to cross at this location as it would be on the shortest route <br />between many of these locations. <br /> <br />A delay analysis was completed using Highway Capacity Manual methodologies for uncontrolled <br />pedestrian crossings. The follow table shows various treatments, associated average delays for pedestrians <br />anticipated during peak roadway hours, and the Level of Service (LOS) corresponding to the delay. In <br />general, LOS correlates to a lettering system where A is the lowest delay and F is the worst delay <br />situation. The higher the delay and lower LOS can lead to pedestrians taking risks to cross the road <br />without waiting, or potentially rerouting to a different crossing location. It also indicates if an alternative <br />results in a staged crossing – in other words if pedestrians can cross one direction of the roadway at a <br />time. <br /> <br />Option Staged Crossing? As indicated in the results, adding enhanced treatments can decrease delay at this <br />location and ultimately improve pedestrian safety by simplifying the crossing and increasing the <br />likelihood of driver yielding. <br /> <br />Summary and Recommendations <br />Middle Street Crossing <br />Depending on the desired destination, each crossing may be appealing to different users. Crossing at Rice <br />Street would add about 1.5 minutes to the overall trip, compared to crossing at Middle Street, if the end <br />destination is to the east. With a destination within The Village or Culver’s area, crossing at Middle Street <br />would add about 3 minutes to the overall trip. These travel time changes have a strong influence on routes <br />are chosen as a pedestrian.
