4 <br />Definitions <br />1.Community <br />Community means… <br />The co-constructed identity that connects those who live, work, and/or play within a particular <br />place and at a particular time. <br />Community involves… <br />●Acknowledging past, present, and future histories, experiences, and traumas <br />●Establishing, maintaining, and revising shared traditions, norms, and relationships <br />●Having one’s individual needs, desires, and ideas considered by and reflected in a <br />greater collective narrative <br />Questions to consider <br />1.Who does our identity include, who does our identity exclude, and who are we forgetting <br />right now? <br />2.What structural and systemic disparities and differences exist in our space? <br />3.What beliefs, values, and goals motivate those in our space? <br />4.How does our ideal community vision align with our current community realities? <br />5.How do community advancement efforts represent, accommodate, and respond to <br />existing community demographics? <br /> <br />2.Engagement <br />Engagement means… <br />Actively calling in community members in community problem solving, knowledge gathering, <br />and decision making. <br />Engagement involves… <br />●Empowering community members to share their honest thoughts and experiences and <br />allowing the feedback obtained to inform the final outcome <br />●Developing and implementing varied and accessible public participation opportunities <br />throughout all stages of a project or initiative
