Currently, the existing shelter has a gable style roof, approximately 20 ft. x 24 ft. (480 sqft), sits
on a concrete pad, and can accommodate four picnic tables. During non-pandemic times, this
shelter is often rented on the weekends and even on some weekdays throughout the rental season.
This season, due to the pandemic shelter rentals have been very low due to restrictions of group
sizes the City can rent to, but staff is seeing that the shelter is still getting used a lot with small
groups.

Staff recommends the new shelter be large enough to accommodate six picnic tables, installed on
a new concrete pad that would incorporate the existing hand-pump well (incorporating the
existing well would help eliminate muddy conditions around the hand-pump well during times of
heavy use), has electricity and lighting, has a wood soffit (to minimize noise), and offers an
enhanced look.

Attached are the shelter styles that fit within those parameters.

Size Square Feet Est. The Commission recommends the approval of the midlevel Poligon steel
shade structure.

BUDGETARY IMPACT
$75,000 has been budgeted in the General Capital Improvement Fund (Fund 400) for this project.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Council provide feedback and direction on the new shelter structure
to move forward with at Spooner Park. Staff recommends the City Council move forward with
the recommendation of the Parks & Recreation Commission.

ATTACHMENTS
• Little Canada Spooner Park Lower Shelter Alternatives
• September 3, 2020, Parks & Recreation Minutes
