City of Little Canada, Minnesota
Tree Policy

1. Purpose
The purpose of the City of Little Canada tree policy is to manage tree trimming and
removal on public property as well as identifying diseased trees on private property.

2. Tree Removal on Public Property
The City will remove hazardous and diseased trees from public property, which includes
parks, right-of-way, boulevards, and any other City-owned property. An arborist will be
consulted if there is a question on whether or not a tree poses a hazard. The City will
defer to the opinion on the arborist. The City does not remove healthy trees from public
property unless there is a valid reason to do so.

If the tree was located in the boulevard the stump will be ground down below the surface
and black dirt and seed will be added. Neighboring homeowners are asked to water the
seed.

City crews remove trees that they are qualified to handle and use a tree removal
contractor for all other removals. The City solicits quotes from tree removal contractors
every one-to-two years for annual tree contracting services. The City reserves the right
to solicit quotes from multiple contractors for large tree removals or other jobs that are
not listed in the contract for services.

3. Tree Trimming on Public and Private Property
City crews trim trees along streets, sidewalks, trails, and intersections as necessary to
maintain visibility along streets, proper sightlines at intersections, and to eliminate
branches hitting vehicles and pedestrians.

The City may need to trim trees on private property if they have branches that extend out
into the street or sidewalk or if they are impeding sightlines at intersections. The City
will trim the trees to ensure that the long term health of the tree remains strong.

4. Tree Removal on Private Property
It is the responsibility of the property owner to remove diseased and/or hazardous trees
on their own property. If the property owner hires a contractor to remove the tree the
contractor must be licensed to remove trees in the City of Little Canada.

A property owner may also choose to remove the tree themselves. In this case, the wood
and brush may be taken to a Ramsey County Yard Waste site. Ramsey County is under
quarantine so wood and brush may not be transported out of the county.
