For trees that are on property lines or branches that extend into abutting properties,
property owners should follow the state tree laws and guidelines.

5. Boulevard/Right-of-Way Trees
Trees in the right-of-way or on the boulevard are the responsibility of the City. Property
owners may not plant a tree or shrub in the boulevard. In addition, property owners who
wish to trim or remove a boulevard tree should contact the City’s Public Works
Department for permission.

6. Diseased Trees
The City will keep an inventory of all ash, elm, and oak trees on public property and will
remove any that become diseased with Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), Dutch Elm’s Disease,
or Oak Wilt. The City may determine that treating ash trees is a better option in some
areas rather than removal.

Diseased trees found on private property are the responsibility of the property owner to
remove or treat. Diseased trees should be removed as soon as possible to help prevent
the spread of the disease to additional trees. Property owners should refrain from pruning
oaks, ash, and elm trees during the active months for the trees. Generally, trees should be
pruned between December and March.

7. Licensed Tree Contractors
Any contractor wishing to perform tree removal or trimming services in Little Canada
must obtain a contractor license from the City.

8. Tree and Brush Pickup Following Major Storms
If there is a major storm event the City will make a determination on whether it will pick
up trees and brush from private property based on the amount of brush and downed trees
along with the size of the area affected. Once the determination is made it will be
communicated to all residents. City crews and any contractors will pick up brush that
property owners have piled near the street.
