STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of the City Council

FROM: Bryce Shearen, CPRP, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager

DATE: January 27, 2021

RE: Little Canada Recreation Association Rink Board Donation

ACTION REQUESTED
Motion to approve the donation of $101,660.46 from the Little Canada Recreation Association.

BACKGROUND:
Staff met with the Little Canada Recreation Association (LCRA) to discuss possible projects that the
LCRA could contribute to enhancing the City’s Parks & Recreation offerings. The rink boards at the
Fire Barns rink were in rough shape and need of repair. The LCRA expressed an interest in funding the
replacement of the rink boards.

The LCRA committed to donating up to $102,000 for new rink boards and installation at the Fire
Barns rink. Staff worked with coordinating the project during the summer of 2020. The project was
completed in late summer with a total project cost of $101,660.46. The rinks have been heavily used
so far this winter and staff has received many positive comments on the great addition to the Little
Canada Park System.

This generous donation is greatly appreciated and a welcome enhancement to the new warming house
that the LCRA also help fund a portion of.

BUDGETARY IMPACT
This project was budgeted for in City’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) with the understanding that
the Little Canada Recreation Association would reimburse the City up to $102,000.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Council approve the donation for the rink boards at the Fire Barns rink.
