The Canadian Days Committee has indicated they would prefer not to work with a race
management company and are willing to plan and coordinate the event this year. The committee
would welcome any additional assistance if staff or City Council members are interested in
volunteering at this event in some capacity. Staff is requesting feedback from the City Council
on your interest in participating in this event.
Canadian Days Fireworks
The Canadian Days Committee would like to have their annual fireworks show on Saturday
night. Last year the Council discussed having a fireworks display but ultimately decided to
cancel the show for 2020. There was discussion about the City offering additional support in
some way for 2021 to make the next Canadian Days extra special. The Council passed the
following resolution on July 8, 2020:
McGraw introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION NO. 2020-7-87 – LET THE CANADIAN DAYS COMMITTEE KNOW
THAT THE CITY COUNCIL COMMITS TO WORKING WITH THEM TO
PROVIDE A BETTER CANADIAN DAYS IN 2021
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Torkelson.
Roll Call Vote: Keis/Torkelson/Fischer/Montour/McGraw
Ayes (5). Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
The approved budget for 2021 includes $7,500 for the Canadian Days fireworks display from the
10% Gambling Fund. The City Council also discussed the possibility of increasing this amount
for 2021 in order to make the fireworks show better and/or longer, or even considering two
nights of a fireworks show. There may be additional staffing needs during the fireworks to
consider if Council or the Committee wants to have two nights of fireworks.
Staff spoke with the Canadian Days fireworks vendor (RES Pyro) about increasing the budget
for 2021. Fireworks have increased this year due to a low supply and shipping costs. The
following are possible options for the City of Little Canada:
$7,500 would get us about a 13-14 minute show with a decent finale – same intensity as
over the last few years, but 2-3 of minutes shorter due to the higher costs of fireworks.
$10,000 would give us about a 16-17 minute show with more intensity than prior years.
Little Canada does not shoot off fireworks larger than 4 inches due to the proximity of
the spectators and the neighboring homes, so the primary variable for Little Canada is
the intensity (how many and how fast). Vendor stated that after 20 minutes of fireworks,
the crowd quickly loses their attention, so he suggested not going any longer than that.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Discuss and provide direction on how to proceed regarding the events listed above.
