MINUTES
PARKS & REC COMMISSION
NOVEMBER 5, 2020

4
Commissioner Chu commented that she is pleased to see this event continue as there have been
so many things the community has been missing.

REPORTS FROM COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Ray stated that he was at Spooner Park tonight and displayed a photograph of the
woods that is a beautiful area to walk. He noted that with the additional parking, new
playground, and the shelter that will be revamped next spring this will be a gem in the City.

The Community Services Manager replied that he is working with a group of students from
Duluth looking for a naturalist project. He stated that the students will look at Spooner Park and
the trail that goes to Gervais Mill Park to provide additional suggestions related to trails, natural
play areas, and signage.

Commissioner Ray thanked Commissioner Schletty for assisting with the election process.

Commissioners Abruzzese and Darling commented that they also served as election judges.

Commissioner Schletty encouraged any of the Commissioners and/or residents to volunteer as
election judges in the future. He stated that since the group last met, he has visited Pioneer Park
a few times and has not noticed anything different.

Commissioner Horwath commented on the early snowfall received, noting that the plowing crew
plowed in the extension to the trail. He stated that the trail extensions have to remain clear and
available for people to access the trails from cul-de-sacs and streets, especially in this time when
people are attempting to socially distance.

Commissioner Darling commented that Rondo Park is still there, and nothing has changed. She
stated that she is unsure how any of the parks got their names and asked if that is documented
anywhere.

The Community Services Manager confirmed that is documented and will be included in the
interpretive signage that will be installed at the different parks.

Commissioner Chu referenced the pond near the park she is assigned to and asked who is
responsible for cleaning that out. She stated that there is some trash that needs to be cleaned out.

The Community Services Manager commented that either community groups or staff would
clean that area.

Commissioner Chu stated that the group previously discussed the adopt-a-park concept and
stated that perhaps more thought could be put into that idea.
