STAFF REPORT <br />TO:Parks & Recreation Commission <br />FROM:Bryce Shearen, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Manager <br />DATE:September 2, 2021 <br />RE:New Recreation Coordinator <br />ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED: <br />None. <br />BACKGROUND: <br />Please welcome Sierra Hietala as the new full-time Recreation Coordinator for the Parks and <br />Recreation Department. Ms. Hietala began on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. With the recent <br />transitions in this position, the increasing amount of duties, employee retention, and long-term <br />projects on the horizon, the City Council approved at its August 25, 2021 meeting to change the <br />status of this position to a regular full-time position. This is also inline with the strategic <br />objectives of the 5-year Strategic Plan that was adopted in 2019 with a priority of creating <br />operational efficiency and implementing a revised organizational structure. <br />Ms. Hietala brings a lot of great experience and energy to this position. She is excited about <br />building youth and adult programming in Little Canada utilizing her work experience and <br />educational experience with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation, Parks and Leisure <br />Services from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Sierra has a passion for building <br />community and relationships and looks forward to utilizing that passion in Little Canada. <br />Ms. Hietala has been acclimating well and has been busy working on the Little Canada Farmers <br />Market, upcoming events and youth activities, and social media on top of her daily duties. Ms. <br />House will be at the Commission meeting to provide a brief update on the Farmers Market, <br />upcoming youth programs, and the next community event. <br />ATTACHMENTS: <br />Sierra Hietala Biography
