City of Little Canada 2-9 Land Use Plan

Forecast of Population, Households and Employment
The table below shows past and forecast numbers for local population, households and jobs.
The sources are the decennial U.S. Census, the ongoing American Community Survey and the
Metropolitan Council.
The American Community Survey asks basic demographic questions of a relatively small sample
of households in years between the ten-year census counts. Their population estimate for
2018 was approximately 200 people higher than the year 2040 forecast by the Metropolitan
Council. However, the number of households forecast for year 2020 was nearly identical by the
two sources.
Therefore, the City proposes to adjust the demographic forecast for years 2020, 2030 and 2040
as follow:
Growth in households occurring sooner than forecast by the Metropolitan Council,
reflecting the high 2018 population estimate from the American Community Survey
A slightly higher average household size
By 2040, an equal number of households and people as forecast by the Metropolitan
Council.
These differences are negligible on a regional scale and should be easily accommodated by
regional and county infrastructure for sewers and highways.
These forecasts will be evaluated during each future round of comprehensive planning.
Table 2-2: Forecasts of Population, Households and Employment
Metropolitan Council
Forecasts
City of Little Canada
Forecasts
2000 2010 2018 2020 2030 2040 2020 2030 2040
Population 9,771 9,773 10,523 9,900 10,300 10,300 10,137 10,535 10,300
Households 4,375 4,393 4,623 4,600 4,870 4,900 4,650 4,900 4,900
Employment 5,960 5,467 7,000 7,600 8,100 7,000 7,600 8,100
Average
Household Size 2.23 2.22 2.21 2.15 2.11 2.1 2.18 2.15 2.11
Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, Metropolitan Council.
2018 figures were estimated by the US Census Bureau from a small sample.

Note that the estimated population has increased by 7.7 percent and the number of
households by 5.2 percent since 2010, according to the American Community Survey, a service
of the US Census Bureau.
Note also that the employment count in 2010 was made during a steep economic recession.
