STAFF REPORT

TO: Mayor Keis and Members of the City Council

FROM: Bryce Shearen, CPRP, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Director

DATE: March 9, 2022

RE: Purchase Park Entrance Signs

ACTION REQUESTED
A motion to approve the purchase of new park entrance signs from Vacker Sign in the amount of
$23,120.00.

BACKGROUND
New park entrance signs have been scheduled in the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for
replacement for the last two years. Due to global supply chain issues since the pandemic hit, the
materials have been very difficult to obtain for new signage and the project was moved forward
to 2022.

Staff has been working with a local sign company on a design for the new signs. The current
signs are made of wood and are nearing the end of life and one of them is missing due to
vandalism. Wood signs require additional maintenance and have a shorter lifespan so staff would
like to install low/minimal maintenance signs moving forward.

The proposed new signs are made from a bi-color HDPE plastic with the letters routed out
exposing the secondary color. These HDPE sign panels provide a durable, vandal-resistant, low-
maintenance sign that will not need painting and will not fade, rot, crack, chip, or delaminate like
traditional wood signs. Also included are cedar-colored recycled plastic lumber posts that staff
would recommend installing to support the new signs. The recycled plastic posts are reinforced
with fiberglass for increased structural integrity and will not need to be painted or stained. The
recycled plastic will also eliminate the issue with wood rot that occurs near the ground with
traditional wood posts due to contact with the soil. Additionally, the font size on the new signs is
the same size as the current park entrance signs.

If approved, there is a six-to-eight-week lead time on the signs. Once the signs are completed,
in-house staff will be utilized for the removal of existing signs and installation of the new signs.

SIGNS TO BE REPLACED
Fire Barns Skate Park Gervais Mill Park
(Edgerton Entrance)
Gervais Mill Park
(Noel Drive Entrance)
Gilbertson Field Nadeau Wildlife Area Pioneer Park
(Centerville Rd Entrance)
Pioneer Park
(Desoto St Entrance)
Rondeau Park Thunder / Westwinds Park
Veterans Memorial Park
