MINUTES <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />OCTOBER 8, 2008 <br />introduced Jerry Hromatka, who will be succeeding her effective February <br />1, 2009. <br />Hromatka thanked the Council for the opportunity to provide an update on <br />NYFS activities over the past year. He reported in detail beginning with <br />the services provided by the agency which include out-patient mental <br />health counseling, day treatment for youth, diversion program, summer <br />camp, senior chore program, youth employment program, Penny Pinchers <br />Thrift Store, community social workers and discovery initiative. <br />Hromatka indicated that the agency strives to prepare youth and families <br />for healthy lives. <br />Hromatka noted that the estimated cost of services for 2008 is $105,485, <br />of which the City's share is estimated at $14,202. These dollars will <br />provide services to 46 people in Little Canada throughout 2008. <br />Hromatka indicated that Little Canada's contribution toward NYFS <br />services helps to lower property crime, decrease domestic incidents <br />resulting in less reliance on law enforcement, decrease the number of at- <br />risk children, help people achieve higher educational levels, and make for <br />more productive employees. <br />Hromatka reported that NYFS is expanding its programs, improving <br />infrastructure, and changing leadership. He updated the Council on the <br />infrastructure improvements, which involves the addition of the Discovery <br />Center, a center that will provide space for hands-on, experiential learning <br />and physical activity. The Discovery Center will be a community resource <br />for youth sports, meetings, festivals and family celebrations. Hromatka <br />asked the Council to pass a resolution in support of NYFS fund-raising <br />efforts to pay for these improvements. <br />Ms. Allan introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: <br />RESOL UTION NO. 2008-10-247 -SUPPORTING AND ENDORSING <br />THE NORTHWEST YOUTHAND FAMILYSERVICES CAMPAIGN <br />TO CREATE THE DISCOVERY CENTER <br />The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by McGraw. <br />Ayes (4). <br />Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted. <br />Blesener indicated that Little Canada's cost share for NYFS services is an <br />investment in the City's youth. He also wished Kay Andrews well in her <br />retirement. Blesener noted that if there is anyone interested in serving on <br />the NYFS Board, they should contact the City Administrator to express <br />their interest. <br />
