MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 8, 2008
MAYOR AND The City Administrator reported that the Mayor's and Council Members'
COUNCIL salaries have not been increased since 1997. He presented the Council
SALARIES with information on the salaries being paid by comparable cities, noting
that Little Canada salaries are now low in comparison. The Administrator
noted that any salary increases would have to be enacted before a City
election and could not take effect until after the election.
The Council had a lengthy discussion on whether or not to increase their
salaries. Allan felt an increase should not be adopted at this time given the
current economy. Blesener pointed out that these are not positions that
should be highly paid; however, they are not positions that should be
voluntary. He noted that the Mayor and Council Members put in a lot of
time. McGraw indicated that he was surprised that these salaries have not
been increased since 1997, and felt that they should be reviewed on a more
fi•equent basis. The City Administrator noted that these salaries were
reviewed in 2004 and 2005 and the Council decision was to not adopt
increases at those times.
The Council continued their review of the salary issue, and based on the
information provided the consensus was to consider an increase to $5,700
per year for the Mayor and $4,630 per year for Council Members. Allan
indicated that she would like to see an increase considered for Planning
Commission Members as well. The City Administrator indicated that
surrounding cities would be surveyed to determine compensation levels
for Planning Commission members and Parks & Recreation Members.
Mr. Montour introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION NO.2008-10-253 -INSTRUCTING CITY STAFF TO
PUT TOGETHER AN ORDINANCE AMENDMENT PROPOSING AN
INCREASE IN THE MAYOR'S AND COUNCIL MEMBERS'
ANNUAL SALARIES AT $5,700AND $4,630 RESPECTIVELYFOR
CONSIDERATIONAT THE OCTOBER 22, 2008 REGULAR
COUNCIL MEETING
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Blesener.
Ayes (3) Montour, Blesener, McGraw.
Nays (1) Allan. Resolution declared adopted.
LCRA Montour reminded the general public that the Little Canada Recreation
HALLOWEEN Association will be holding their annual Halloween Dance on Saturday,
DANCE October 25, 2008. Tickets can be obtained at City Hall or at the door.
