MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
December 4, 2008
OLD
BUSINESS: NORTH/SOUTH TRAIL CONNECTION:
Sanders reported he and Morelan had a meeting with the National Park Service Outdoor Recreation
Planner Holly Larson. The City of Little Canada was approved for counseling assistance from this
group for this trail connection. Larson will be sending out a letter requesting a meeting with the
cities of Little Canada and Maplewood, Ramsey County, St. Jude and Roseville Area Middle
School to resolve some of the issues on this trail connection. It will be determined if this would be
a feasible project, and if so, we would apply for further funding assistance.
He again stated that the Pedestrian Bridge Project over Highway 36 would be a challenging project
and would require major funding assistance from MN Dot to complete this hail extension when
Davis asked about the progress. He said it would be a long term project and the grant program is
usually based on a 80/20 percentage with the Federal grant being 80% and local funding at 20%.
OTHER: GERVAIS BEACH:
Morelan stated he contacted Ramsey County and they again plan to close the park to lake access to
prevent damage to the turf area this winter. They do plan to put the barricade further down the road
to allow for vehicles to turn around and some parking space. Sanders commented that there was a
pile of sand in the park area, so they probably plan to repair the beach area with new sand.
NADEAU PARK:
Morelan reported the City has plans to dredge the wetland pond area at Nadeau Park this winter
in an effort to improve the water quality of Savage Lake.
TERMS OF OFFICE EXPIRING DECEMBER 31, 2008:
Chair Davis wished Clara Neis well in all future endeavors and thanked her for her years served on
the Park & Recreation Commission. Chair Davis also commented that she has thoroughly enjoyed
serving on the commission as her term also is expiring and she is not seeking reappointment.
OTHER BUSINESS:
Steinwell suggested moving the January meeting date to Tuesday, January 6, 2009 as the regular
meeting date is New Years Day.
Morelan commented that the City Council will be approving and appointing the new Park &
Recreation Commissioners at their December 22"d Council Meeting.
Morelan stated there will again be a tree tribute sponsored by the Friends of the Parks and Trails of
St. Paul and Ramsey County this year. Residents can give a unique and caring gift of a tree for the
planting in a park of their choice. Details are available in the brochure on the display in the City
Page 2 of 3
