MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
March 5, 2009
Group to see if there are any projects they could possibly assist us with in the future.
Lolmaugh agreed to keep in touch with this Group. Sanders suggested the commissioners
take a look a different projects that could be considered for the future when they go on the
park tour this spring. One project could be the removal of buckthorn in the parks.
Maida asked if the city removed buckthorn from residential properties. Morelan stated that
the city typically does not, but he had phone numbers of several groups to contact with
additional information, such as the University of Minnesota.
PARKS FOUNDATION
Sanders stated that he has researched some cities that have a Parks Foundation. His findings
revealed that they are non-profit organizations separate from the city. He stated that usually
these are initiated with a large donation from people or businesses that have a desire to
improve the parks within their city. Many provide assistance to have residents include the
foundation as a recipient in their estate.
Slain asked if the foundation would need a donation before the foundation could be formed.
Sanders stated that it would not require a donation to initiate, but that it would need to be
started by another organization and would not be a city entity. He suggested submitting a
small article about organizing this foundation on the Parks & Recreation webpage.
Morelan commented that a parks foundation has never been actively solicited before. Trees
and park benches have been donated in the past, but there has never been an abundance of
donations given for the city parks.
Sanders stated he will continue to research other parks foundations and will report his
findings at the next meeting.
Sullivan asked if the commissioners thought it would be beneficial if a member of the
Roseville Cenrial Park Foundation came to one of our future meetings and talked to us about
how they started their foundation. Both Morelan and Sanders commented that that foundation
started with large donations from. several prominent business owners in Roseville. Sullivan
stated she would contact someone from that Foundation to speak to us.
OLD
BUSINESS: NORTH/SOUTH TRAIL CONNECTION
Sanders showed on six large aerial maps the proposed trail connection, beginning at the south
end at Larpenteur Avenue extending to the north end at Highway 694, for the most part
following the Sioux Line railroad hacks. On the south end, within the City of Maplewood,
Page 3 of 5
