MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
Apri12, 2009
Morelan recommended the Quest for Power group obtain survey or petition responses from
the neighborhood and bring the results back to our commission meeting on May 7`~'
OLD
BUSINESS: VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Sullivan reported she made a request for park assistance at the Lake Owasso Garden Club
meeting last month. The Garden Club has already scheduled their projects for this year and
had to decline our request for assistance. Steinert suggested we put our request in this fall for
their assistance for next year.
Sullivan recommended the commissioners make notes on what improvements are necessary at
each park when they are on the park tours. Sanders also asked that they check the condition
of the park equipment, noting if any need to be upgraded.
PARKS FOUNDATIONS
Sanders stated that he has researched some Parks Foundations and passed around three
different foundations he had copied as examples. Steinert asked if it had to be organized by a
non-profit organization. Sanders stated it has to be an organization with a 503C tax status and
separate from the city or Park & Recreation Commission. He stated there are certain tax
benefits for donors. Sanders commented that the cost is $100 fee to start and there are many
legal rules that need to be followed in the set-up and maintenance of the foundation.
Sullivan reported that she contacted the Roseville Cenrial Park Foundation Chairman Monte
Johnson and he agreed to come to our next meeting to speak to us about their foundation.
Sullivan stated Johnson would like some feedback of what we would like to know, so the
group summarized that they would like to know how their foundation was organized, the
number of donors, if they have fundraising activities, and how they promote their foundation.
Sullivan stated she would contact Johnson with that information and invite him to attend our
meeting and be placed on the agenda at 8:00 p.m.
Sanders suggested having an area foundation formed where surrounding communities could
unite into one foundation. He wondered if there would be any benefits to combining cities.
The consensus was it would probably not be a good idea as donors from one community
would want their donation to be given to their community.
