MINUTES
PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
MARCH 3, 1994
PARK Wehrle pointed out the Commission's discussion in
DEVELOPMENT recent months about the park site in the area of the
WEST SIDE OF Jackson Heights development and adjacent to the Rue
FREEWAY property. Wehrle asked the Commission's thoughts about
the need for recreational development on the west side of
the freeway. Wehrle pointed out that discussion of the
Park Acquisition Fund is scheduled for later on the
agenda, and felt that whether or not another recreational
site is needed on the west side of the freeway would
affect that discussion. Wehrle asked the Park & Rec
Director if he knew the demographics of the population on
the west side of the freeway.
The Director felt there was a mix of all age groups on
the west side of the freeway, however, there are pockets
where there are a lot of young families with children.
The Director also pointed out that the majority of the
City's multiple-family housing is located on the west
side of the freeway, and he did not believe there were
large concentrations of children in the multi-family
housing.
Wehrle pointed out that parking would be an issue for the
park site adjacent to the Rue property given that this
property would have to be accessed by vehicle through the
industrial park. Wehrle asked if Commissioners felt
there were any other sites located on the west side of
the freeway that were better suited as a recreational
site. Wehrle pointed out the undeveloped site off
Jackson Street and LaBore Road.
The Administrative Assistant pointed out that the front
portion of that site lying on Little Canada Road is zoned
business, while further north the zoning changed to R-1.
Wehrle felt the site was more suited for recreational
development since access from the residential
neighborhood was better. Wehrle pointed out that the
asking price of the site next to the Water Works property
is $80,000 or $85,000.
Wehrle stated that he would like to look at the Park
Acquisition Fund in relationship to land the Commission
feels needs to be acquired to fulfill the Park Master
Plan. Wehrle felt the park system should be developed as
a system; that is developing recreational areas at both
the neighborhood and community levels. Wehrle stated
2
