Minutes
Parks & Recreation
September 5, 1996
Remerowski mentioned that $40,000 is not enough to expand
the Centerville side of the parking lot. Morelan felt it
would depend on the size of the expansion, and he did not
have figures on a large expansion versus a small one.
Remerowski remarked further work would need to be done for
drainage. Morelan agreed, stating the farther north an
expansion would go, the more drainage work would need to be
done.
Christensen asked if parking is allowed on the street in
front of Pioneer Park. Morelan responded that parking is
not allowed by the county. Christensen asked how many
additional cars would be accommodated by the expansion.
Morelan responded about 70. Christensen asked what winter
usage of the park is. Morelan stated the major use in the
winter is walking trails. Johnson stated this issue has
been batted around quite a bit, with varying opinions.
Morelan stated people will park on the Centerville side at
the risk of getting a ticket instead of utilizing the
overflow lot on the other side. Rajanen mentioned the case
of Holm's home video of the Centerville Road parking during
one tournament, and the excessive parking occurring then.
Morelan mentioned again the overflow lot is designed to be a
small ball field with a 200 foot fence, and this should be
remembered when considering future needs.
Remerowski mentioned the park is not completely developed,
and more activities will be added. He stated it was known
from the beginning that the parking was not adequate, but
was approached from the "wait and see" attitude. He stated
waiting will not reduce the cost of the parking lot, nor
reduce its need. He felt it would be wiser to do it now and
be done with it, rather than spend more in the future.
Holm stated as a resident of Centerville Road, initially he
was opposed to having the parking lot expansion on
Centerville. He felt after taking a closer look at the
situation, he realizes if a parking lot expansion were put
in on the other side, it probably would not be used. He
felt it has to be on the Centerville side. In addition, he
felt a larger lot would decrease the possibility of
accidents. Holm added he would not like to see an increase
in traffic encouraged, and have the speed limit remain at 40
miles per hour without adequate shoulders.
Remerowski asked about the traffic study that was slated for
Centerville Road. Morelan stated the county has been
contacted, but the study has not occurred as of yet. Greger
stated that 1998 or 1999, Centerville Road is scheduled for
reconstruction.
Greger stated he received information from Doug Taubman of
Maplewood regarding the parking situation as he noted it.
2
